What's on the Hob? (August '26)
28-09-26
I am sorry I am late, and I am sorry that, further to that, I shall be somewhat brief.
It has been busy in the last few weeks, particularly in the last week or so, and it has been an exceptionally momentous equinox, and so sadly the grand tradition of WotH had to take a slight backseat.
But I have made it to you by Michaelmas Eve, so it feels to me like we have not yet clicked into full Autumn mode. So grab your last batch of blackberries and get ready to find out all the latest happenings from parts Repiqued.
On the go
A very light load currently. If I manage to have anything actually on the Plinth next installment I will consider that a huge success.
- I am part-way through migrating to a proper framework for this website, which should hopefully make updating it less irritating. This is more 'behind the scenes' than I would normally include on the hob itself, but I feel it will have reasonable impact to future output, so have included. The work is currently on pause (see intro), but I expect (in a loose sense of the word) to be done by Winter.
- Further development / refinement work on Witan (see the Plinth below).
Mise en Plays
A singular morsel this season I fear.
- I have bought a bunch of concertina-related sheet music, and have now started playing occasionally outside of the house / with other people.
Corner of Shame
The corner grows ever larger, far past 90 degrees. Its obtuseness means it now approaches a line.
- Kaiso etc. is buried under a big pile of dust, although recent Calypso fiddling has ensured it is at least rememberd.
- "A Gallon from our Lady's Well" fares less well, nearly fully forgotten.
- The Looney pyramids game has had verging on negative thought to it.
- The game that isn't called Mole (TGTICM for short, as I anticipate it staying here some time) has unchanged status.
- The card game database (Capot Schwarz) has had very very minor fiddling.
- Pippins Aplenty / Scalade strategy and numerics lives in heads only.
- The Sussex Tarot page still needs a spruce-up.
- Card puzzle has come close to being worked on, mainly due to its loose adjacency to Pointless Havilering game investagtions (see the Plinth), but not actually been worked on.
- Auction Scalade has faltered so far.
Plinth of Glory
A surprisingly full Plinth this season. It does not feel like I have been overly productive (in these matters), but I have managed to focus the time I have had to knock some stuff over the boundary rope.
- I just managed to kick the pointless Havilering blog post over the line. In some ways it is still somewhat shameful, as I said in the last edition that I thought it would be out in the next week from then, but took nearly another three months. But crucially it is actually done now.
- My Scalade/Pippins 'spiritually similar' game Witan is now live. It is still somewhat in-flux, but it does have a complete ruleset, and is perfectly playable.
- I have stuck together my digital game implementations under a single domain at The Queen and Widow. As well as existing games (Scalade, Pippins Aplenty, and Havilering), I have added implementations for Witan and Calypso, including Embers Calypso (which I have slightly revised, as per this blog post). I haven't quite figured out the longer-term vision for this site/these implementations, but for now it is convenient to have them bundled together.
